PUSSY RIOT.

I know I’ve written about Feminism quite a lot on this little platform and I am well aware that for some of you, reading about it may have become a little beige. The thing about that is though, I really couldn’t give a fuck.

I’ve heard so many people say this isn’t our fight. Trust me when I say, it would be easy to bury our tampons in the sand and pretend that what is currently going down in America has nothing to do with us and go about our day.

How easy is it though, to continue to believe that having the most powerful office on the planet occupied by a misogynistic, homophobic, transphobic, racist, xenophobic, ableist, totally self involved, egotistical man baby who just so happens to be a documented sex pest has no flow on effect to the rest of us?

That’s what I thought.

The things this absolute clown is saying, the way he treats women and the actions of those he celebrates change the way we’re viewed. It chips away at our sense of self and attempts to destroy years of hard work; fighting for equality for all people, not just women.

If you’re a person with any integrity, human compassion or light in you at all, this should matter to you.

When we elect someone like him to power, we are telling ourselves something about the state of the world, what to expect from each other and how to go about our lives.

It makes catcalling okay.

It silences and diminishes sexual assault survivors and their stories.

It tells young children that fear and hatred are stronger than love and acceptance.

It allows people with disabilities to be laughed at and publicly humiliated.

It takes away a woman’s right to decide what happens to her body.

It breeds fear in the hearts of Transgender people, undocumented people, people of colour, Muslim people, queer people, all children, women who don’t succumb to a particular standard of beauty, women in general, veterans, artists, creatives, non-heteronormative families etc, etc, etc, etc.

It teaches young girls and women everywhere that the value you place on yourself should be based only on your ability to attract someone who would want to grab you by the pussy.

It excuses bad behaviour by giving in to the mentality that boys will be boys and that ‘locker room talk’ is merely a representation of a man’s right to objectify women.

It makes it okay to ignore our dark history and to laugh about the way our countries were founded on the backs of oppression, slavery, mass genocide and stolen land.

It allows minority groups to be further marginalized and discriminated against.

It encourages hate speech.

It creates a world in which my rapist believes he has done nothing wrong and that I am to blame.

It suggests that the colour of your skin somehow determines your social standing.

It fosters the idea that being a woman makes you less than, someone to be controlled and silenced.

It diminishes the responsibilities of those who should know better.

It takes the spotlight off those who are doing good and trying to create change.

So, no! I’m not sorry. I’m so not fucking sorry for bringing this up again. I’m really, truly, not sorry for standing up for those who are struggling to be heard or for standing up for myself.

There is so much good in this world and I have to believe that together we are stronger. I can’t just reside myself to the fact that what’s done is done and we aren’t able to make a difference now. We must continue to fight for our rights. We cannot be distracted by the stupidity of some, when we can do better. We can not be silenced, we must lead the way.

I will use my privilege as an able bodied, cis white person, with a half way decent education and a roof over my head to stand beside those with less and remind those with more that we are powerful and I will not stop talking about this. Ever.

Love, P
